Buteyko Breathwork for Sleep Apnea

Our approach to sleep apnea at Planken Integrative Wellness includes learning how to breathe better.

Buteyko Breathwork is a helpful supplement to other sleep apnea treatments, helping to retrain dysfunctional breathing patterns that may be hurting your sleep quality and overall health.

The Buteyko method was invented in the 1950s by Dr. Konstantin Buteyko.

It focuses on gentle nasal breathing and breath control techniques to calm the nervous system, restore oxygen balance, and reduce airway collapse.

Many patients find this breathwork to be very helpful in helping them sleep and breathe more easily.

Why Breathing Patterns Matter for Sleep

Many sleep apnea patients have disordered breathing without knowing it.

They may breathe too quickly, too forcefully, or through the mouth instead of the nose.

This over-breathing can feel normal, but it can actually disrupt the body’s balance of oxygen and carbon dioxide.

Chronic mouth breathing and poor breath control can lead to inflammation, weakened airway muscles, and increased apneas during sleep.

This can create fatigue, heart issues, anxiety, and brain fog in the patient’s life—all common symptoms of sleep apnea.

Buteyko breathing is a natural, drug-free method of addressing sleep-related issues by improving nasal breathing and helping the body regulate breathing.

What Happens During Buteyko Therapy?

Dr. Planken customizes each treatment plan to fit your specific concerns or issues.

We’ll pace the exercises to fit your needs and tailor sessions to your concerns—whether you have nasal congestion, anxiety-related breathing, or just want to reduce snoring.

A typical session might include an assessment of your current breathing patterns, including how you breathe at rest, during sleep, and in response to stress.

You’ll learn techniques that encourage slow, quiet breathing, focusing on inhaling through the nose, and improved breath awareness throughout the day.

Common Buteyko Exercises

Buteyko isn’t about forcing your breath—it retrains the body to return to a natural, balanced state.

Most exercises are simple and can be practiced at home. We’ll walk you through them in the office and help you use them in everyday life.

Some common exercises include:

Nasal Breathing Practice

Encouraging full-time nose breathing is foundational, even during light movement or sleep. You’ll learn to keep the lips sealed and guide air gently through the nose to support airway tone and oxygen uptake

Control Pause (CP) Measurement

This test gently evaluates your body’s tolerance for carbon dioxide, a vital measure in Buteyko work. As CO₂ tolerance improves, breathing often becomes calmer, and sleep becomes more restorative

Breath Reduction Exercises

These involve consciously reducing the volume of each breath to mimic a light air hunger sensation. This helps condition the body to tolerate higher CO₂ levels and rely less on over-breathing

Nasal Unblocking

If nasal congestion is an obstacle, specific breath holds combined with gentle walking or movement can often help clear the nasal passages naturally, reducing reliance on decongestants

These exercises can help normalize your breathing volume, reduce snoring, improve oxygen efficiency, and support more stable, uninterrupted sleep over time.

The Powerful Connection

Dr. Planken was introduced to Buteyko breathwork after recognizing many of her patients still struggled with poor sleep even after using oral appliances or improving their diets.

It became apparent that poor breathing patterns were a key factor in whether the patient found success with their treatment.
Adding Buteyko to her sleep apnea treatment was a thoughtful step.

Buteyko supports the same goals as nutritional therapy and other sleep apnea treatments, which are to restore balance, calm the nervous system, and help the body function as a whole.

Is Buteyko Right for You?

Buteyko is helpful for patients recently diagnosed with sleep apnea or upper airway resistance syndrome.

It is especially recommended for those experiencing dry mouth, frequent waking, or daytime fatigue despite other treatments.

It’s also great for those struggling with anxiety, asthma, congestion, or chronic mouth breathing.

This therapy is gentle, accessible, and completely non-invasive.
It becomes a meaningful daily practice for many patients, improving their sleep, energy, focus, and emotional well-being.

Dr. Planken will build a custom treatment plan base on her examination and all pertaining information received including your at home sleep test.
