Sleep Apnea Treatment

Sleep apnea is often not taken as seriously as it should be.

Many people think this disorder affects only the elderly and that it is simply loud snoring, but it’s much deeper than that in reality.

Sleep apnea can impact people of all ages. Even though snoring is one of its many symptoms, the real consequences of the disorder aren’t a laughing matter.

Sleep apnea can increase the risk of stroke, heart attack, diabetes, and other major issues.
Sleep apnea must be treated for these reasons. Thanks to medical advancements, there are several ways to treat the disorder.

At Planken Integrative Wellness, we offer myriad treatment methods to help you overcome your symptoms and possibly resolve your sleep apnea altogether.

Oral Appliance Therapy

Oral appliance therapy uses custom-fitted devices to reposition the lower jaw and tongue to keep the airway open at night.

These devices are compact, portable, and don’t require electricity, making them a convenient choice for those who cannot tolerate CPAP.

Oral appliances also help reduce snoring and improve overall sleep quality. This therapy is a perfect option for patients with mild to severe sleep apnea.

Supplemental Treatments

In addition to our sleep apnea treatments, we also provide supplemental care to aid in breathing and overall health improvement.

Buteyko Breathwork

Buteyko Breathing is a technique that helps manage sleep apnea symptoms when used in conjunction with other treatment methods.

It trains slow nasal breathing to help reduce over-breathing and improve oxygen intake.

Buteyko also supports better nighttime breathing through diaphragmatic breathing and keeping the airway stable during sleep.

It’s not a cure for sleep apnea, but it is a great supplement for other treatments.

Nutritional Therapy

Nutrition plays a big role in your body’s overall health, including your sleep.

We provide nutrition therapy to support better sleep and reduce sleep apnea symptoms.

Being overweight can increase sleep apnea issues, so we help you maintain a balanced diet and exercise to help lower the risk.

Additionally, avoiding large meals, alcohol, and certain foods before bed can help improve your sleep.

We use nutritional therapy along with other treatments approaches to sleep health.

Our Approach to Sleep Apnea Treatment

All of these methods and supplemental treatments are effective in treating sleep apnea.

When you work with us, we’ll ensure your treatments, lifestyle, and habits work towards an optimal outcome that supports your unique needs.

We’ll also listen to your feedback and make adjustments until we find the best route for you.

CPAP—Traditional Sleep Apnea Treatment

Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy has been used for many years in sleep apnea treatment.

This method involves wearing a mask over your nose and mouth as you sleep. A steady stream of air is released through a tube connected to a machine to help keep your airway open.

While CPAP is highly effective, it’s not for everyone.
Some patients struggle to tolerate the machine because it can be uncomfortable and claustrophobic, as well as difficult to travel with.

At Planken Integrative Wellness, we focus on less invasive alternatives to CPAP.

We can refer you to a sleep physician for this treatment for severe sleep apnea, but most of our patients find our other methods are just as helpful.
